For the time being, in our web site you may find in English, the legislation on the protection of personal data, the Processing of Personal Data (Protection of the Individual) Law of 2001, its amendment (Law No. 37(I)/2003), and section106 of The Regulation of Electronic Communications and Postal Services Law of 2004 (112(I)/2004) that deals with unsolicited communications (spam).

Personal data protection deals with the protection of personal information relating to an individual against its unauthorized and illegal collection, recording and further use and it also grants the individual certain rights, i.e. the right of information, the right of access and gives him the possibility to submit to the Office complaints relating to the application of the Law.

22/11/2016 – Cyprus undertakes the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe
On Tuesday 22 November 2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, officially assumed the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe until 19 May 2017, in a special meeting of the Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg. Present at the special meeting were the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, and the Deputy Secretary General, Mrs Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mr Guido Raimondi, and the President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Mrs Gudrun Mosler-Törnström (more…).

Public debate on Independent Authorities and their responsibilities

The Commissioner of Administration and Human Rights, the Commissioner of the Law and Children’s Rights, the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection and the Financial Ombudsman are holding a public debate to present their competences and raise awareness among the citizens.
Series of events related to the Data Protection Day
Venue: 24 January - 4 February 2017
- Poster competition in coordination with the Ministry of Education for children of Primary schools (10 - 12 years old) focusing on the protection of personal data on the internet.
- Interactive workshops in Primary Schools
Spring Conference of European Data Protection Authorities
Venue: Mediterranean hotel Limassol, 27-28 April 2017
The Conference is organised once a year and brings together European Data Protection Authorities. It is addressed to subjects of common interest and helping advance the fundamental right to data protection.
On May 2016, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) has been adopted and It becomes enforceable from the 25th of May 2008.
