Internal Market Information (IMI) System

The Internal Market Information (IMI) System is a secure, online information exchange tool. It was developed to facilitate the exchange of information between public administrations across the EEA and the European Institutions and Bodies involved in the practical implementation of EU law.

The following articles from the GDPR are managed in the IMI system:
Article 56 -Competence of the Lead Supervisory Authority
Article 60 –Cooperation between the Lead Supervisory Authority (LSA) and the other Concerned Supervisory Authorities (CSA)
    Article 61 -Mutual assistance
Article 62 -Joint operations of supervisory authorities
Article 64 -Opinion of the EDPB
Article 65 -Dispute Resolution by the EDPB
    Article 66 -Urgency Procedure

    Personal Data

Personal data in IMI, as a general rule, will remain available for no longer than six months after formal closure of the case or the workflow. After 6 months from closure, the personal data will then become unavailable/invisible to IMI users (users of the supervisory authorities), but still accessible for IMI administrators. A longer period of access to personal data is provided for in an applicable Union act listed in the Annex of the Regulation (EU) No 1024/2012, personal data processed in IMI may be retained for a maximum of 18 months after the formal closure (but unavailable to users). In this time, if access to personal data is required, a request can be made to access the personal data, however full justification will be required. Based on Article 14 of the Regulation, automatic deletion will occur three years after formal closure.

As a rule authorities avoid where possible the entering of personal data into IMI. The fields in IMI subject to personal data regulations are clearly labelled with an exclamation mark (!) throughout IMI. The Access to Personal Data function in IMI provides access to the Authority. IMI will automatically log which user confirmed the access to personal data on behalf of the authority.
